In 1999, quite unexpectedly, during restoration work on a church in Via dei Fusari, portions of wall paintings were uncovered in a room beneath the pulpit of the Cathedral. The excavation of the new space took about three years, and eventually experts from around the world, art historians, and archaeologists faced an astonishing discovery that would add important new pieces to the history of medieval art. A room completely painted over 180 sqm of wall surface dating back to the second half of the 13th century. Sealed shut and filled with debris during the 1300s and buried and hidden for about 7 centuries. Exceptional paintings, original colors, intact subjects and architecture were thus brought to light, offering further testimony of the Sienese school of the 1200s and its leading figures:
Guido da Siena, Dietisalvi di Speme, Guido di Graziano, Rinaldo da Siena.
