The church was founded by a priest named Benedetto and officially recognized by the bishop of Siena Rainerio II around 1168. Throughout the 14th century, San Leonardo experienced a period of prosperity, thanks to numerous donations that allowed, in 1350, the construction of a new church, with a choir decorated by Lippo Vanni in 1370. In those same years, the chapel was embellished with paintings of the Virgin Mary, Saint Augustine, Saint Leonard, and Augustine. In 1366, the monastery was fortified to offer refuge to the population of Santa Colomba in case of wars. The most significant episode in the history of this hermitage was the visit of Pope Pius II in 1460. The hermitage was suppressed in 1782 and incorporated into Lecceto.
