Founded in 1436, the San Marco Museum of Florence was designed by the architect Michelozzo. The convent played an important role in the religious and cultural life of the city, as also evidenced by the story of friar Gerolamo Savonarola.
The museum’s fame is mainly due to the paintings of Beato Angelico, one of the greatest painters of the Renaissance, who frescoed many rooms in the convent. Other paintings by Angelico, from various origins, were collected here in the twentieth century, so the museum offers extraordinary documentation of the painter’s work.
Important collections from the sixteenth century are also featured, with works by Fra Bartolomeo and a section dedicated to artifacts from buildings in the historic centre that were demolished in the nineteenth century.
