Established as a section of the State Archive of Sassari in 1959, it became a State Archive following Presidential Decree no. 1409 of 1963. The historical core of the documentation consists of notarial collections which, from 1550 until the end of the nineteenth century, attest to the socio-economic history of the Nuoro territory. A particularly important source for the political history of Sardinia during the fascist era is the material deposited by the Prefecture and Police Headquarters of Nuoro, comprising thousands of files covering the period 1894-1966. The nineteenth-century cartographic material is also significant. Of considerable interest within the Archive’s bibliographic heritage is the Pinna donation, which includes 1,500 titles, some of which are rare and difficult to find, as well as 25 maps of Sardinia dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
