The Great War Museum of Gorizia, housed in the evocative undergrounds of the 16th-century Dornberg and Tasso Houses, aims to clearly and effectively represent the war events and their human and social impacts.
After an introduction to the First World War, the focus shifts to the events of the Isonzo front.
Alongside the weapons of the conflict, everyday objects from soldiers’ lives are exhibited, which, together with a life-size reproduction of a trench, vividly depict the dramatic reality of the front.
Furthermore, the situation in Gorizia is documented, a true “trench city”, deeply marked by bombings but never entirely abandoned by its inhabitants. The exhibition continues with descriptions of the events of 1917 — the year of the Austro-German breakthrough at Caporetto — and 1918, up to the Italo-Austrian armistice on November 3.
Following the room dedicated to the museum’s history, a section is reserved for General Armando Diaz, showcasing documents, medals, and other items.
