Located in the heart of Corsica, the GR 20 is often described as one of the most challenging hikes in Europe. Stretching for about 200 km, the route is usually divided into two sections: GR South and GR North. The southern stretch is more technical and demanding, while the northern part is considered easier, making it accessible even to less experienced trekkers.

GR 20 Stages

The GR 20 Corsica consists of 16 daily stages that cut diagonally across the French island, starting from Calenzana and finishing in Conca. This trek is tough not just because of its technical difficulties, but also due to unpredictable mountain weather, with sudden changes, strong winds, snow, and fog that can make the journey even more challenging.

Despite its difficulties, the effort is richly rewarded by the breathtaking and varied island landscapes. Along the trail, you’ll come across towering natural pinnacles, dramatic wind-carved craters, beautiful glacial lakes, and majestic snow-capped peaks. Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy spotting local species like wild boars, foxes, golden eagles, red kites, Tyrrhenian wall lizards, Hermann’s salamanders, and many more.

As with any classic hiking route, the Corsica GR20 trek—also called Sentier de grande randonnée 20 or known locally as Fra li Monti—offers numerous welcoming refuges along the way, perfect places to rest, warm up, and recharge for your next stage.
