Housed in Stellata at Virginio’s house, son of the poet Ludovico Ariosto, it gathers over four hundred artifacts offering a broad historical overview of human presence in the territory from the early centuries of the 4th millennium BC up to the medieval and Renaissance periods. It begins with the Neolithic, evidenced by the development of the important village of Fornaci Grandi; then follows the Bronze Age when the Bondeno area was included in the expansion zone of the Terramare civilization, which has the Pilastri settlement as one of its main local strongholds, well represented in the museum by numerous materials, mostly ceramics. The Iron Age is illustrated by the Villanovan necropolis of Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Mosti, while the Roman age features a territorial organization based on scattered rural settlements and large imperial estates near the Po River. Post-classical documentation refers to the territorial control exerted by the Benedictine Monastery of Nonantola, the birth of the castrum Bondeni, and the rule of the House of Este from the 15th century onwards.
