The museum is housed in the 14th-century Pietromarchi palace in Marsciano, the main center in Umbria for brick production and a town built entirely of bricks.
The building, now transformed into a museum, was constructed in the 14th century by the Bulgarelli counts of Marsciano.
The Dynamic Museum of Brick and Terracotta “Enzo Briziarelli” serves as a starting point for a tour extended to the entire municipal area, including the production sites of Compignano and San Fortunato, ancient kilns that document the pre-industrial production of bricks, as well as the satellite museums of Compignano and Spina, exhibition centers that act as documentation hubs on the local traditions.
Since 2004, the restored rooms of the Pietromarchi palace have exhibited numerous bricks—that is, bricks, tiles, and construction materials in general—as well as decorative and everyday terracotta that have characterized the documented production in the municipal area from Roman times to the present. The exhibition also illustrates the social and demographic changes linked to this activity, with particular regard to the processing phases that characterized both the pre-industrial and industrial local production. Some rooms host permanent exhibitions, such as those dedicated to Marsciano artist Antonio Ranocchia (1915-1989) and terracotta whistles.
