In the distinctive red domes that rise in the Palermo sky, the church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti reflects the architectural style of mosques. The origins of the building date back to the 6th century; after being transformed into a mosque during the Arab rule, it was restored by Roger II to its original Christian worship around 1136. The church underwent significant alterations around 1880 by Giuseppe Patricolo.
The cloister is Norman age and strongly influenced by the proximity of the Royal Palace just a few meters away.
