The Museum, inaugurated in 1997, houses numerous ancient artifacts that allow us to trace the millennia-old history of this important center in the middle Sabato valley, located on the border between the provinces of Benevento and Avellino, from prehistory to the modern era. Reopened to the public in May 2003 under the current scientific direction, with new artifacts and a new layout, this cultural venue, located in the crypt of the Collegiate Church of the Assumption, is divided into four rooms, dedicated respectively to the archaeological section, 19th-century folk costumes, the medieval age, and the liturgical vestments of the Altavilla clergy. The first room, dedicated to archaeology, features in the display cases a series of finds discovered in the Altavilla area, confirming the presence of the first human groups in the zone from prehistory to the late Roman era. The second room, very spacious, preserves costumes and precious fabrics from the first half of the 19th century discovered during the clearing of the burial spaces of the Mother Church, restored in the workshop attached to the Museum. In the large display cases there are popular-style clothes for both adults and children. The third room is dedicated to stone artifacts from the medieval and Renaissance periods, while the fourth room exhibits very precious and ancient sacred vestments used by the Altavilla clergy between the 17th and 18th centuries. The entrance hall hosts the permanent documentary exhibition “Industrial Archaeology in Altavilla Irpina: The Sulfur Mines.”
