The Archaeological Park currently covers an area of about 10 hectares, in the area where the ancient settlement once stood. Designed with a non-traditional layout that envisages its progressive, future expansion over the entire ancient urban area (about 85 hectares), it is intended as a center for multiple activities and interests. The vast unexplored area, designated as green space, functions as a typical park-garden, where visitors can spend leisure time in a natural setting restored for enjoyment. The visitable archaeological part covers an area of about 500 square meters: the excavations have brought to light a part of the city identified, for the Roman period, as the center of Picentia, founded in 268 B.C. Part of a wide road axis (9.00 meters wide) oriented East-West is visible, connected to at least two narrower perpendicular road axes; these define two residential blocks (insulae), within which construction phases dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 5th-6th century A.D. have been identified, the period marking the city’s final abandonment. Very limited are the remains of the pre-Roman settlement on which Picentia was built: these are some structures dating back to the 4th century B.C., discovered beneath one of the insulae.
