Il Museo, inaugurated in 1997, houses numerous ancient artifacts that allow us to trace, from prehistory to the modern age, the millennial history of the important center of the middle Sabato valley, located on the border between the provinces of Benevento and Avellino. Reopened to the public in May 2003 under the current scientific direction, with new artifacts and a new setup, the cultural container, located in the crypt of the Collegiate Church of the Assumption, is divided into four rooms, respectively dedicated to the archaeological section, the popular costume of the nineteenth century, the medieval age, and the liturgical vestments of the Altavillese clergy. The first room, dedicated to archaeology, houses a series of artifacts found in the Altavillese territory in the display cases, confirming the presence of the first human groups in the area from prehistory to the late Roman age. The second, very large room, preserves costumes and precious fabrics from the first half of the 19th century found during the clearing of the cemetery areas of the Mother Church, restored in the laboratory annexed to the Museum. In the large display cases, there are popular style clothes both for adults and children. The third room is dedicated to stone artifacts from the medieval and Renaissance periods, while the fourth room exhibits very precious and ancient sacred vestments used by the Altavillese clergy between the 17th and 18th centuries. In the entrance hall, the permanent documentary exhibition “Industrial Archaeology in Altavilla Irpina: The Sulfur Mines” is set up.
