La Civic Art Gallery was effectively established within the city’s ancient museum, inaugurated on June 18, 1882. The prestigious collection displays paintings and sculptures of great interest, spanning a chronological period from the 15th to the 20th century, acquired by the ancient city museum through bequests, donations, and purchases. From the original picture gallery, whose extent is known through archival records, were included the famous panels by Antonello da Messina depicting the Apparition of the Angels to Abraham and Saint Jerome the Penitent, purchased in 1882 from the Rota family, a unique example in Calabria regarding the production of the Sicilian master.
