La Pinacoteca civica was actually born within the ancient city museum, inaugurated on June 18, 1882. The prestigious collection exhibits paintings and sculptures of great interest spanning a chronological range from the 15th to the 20th century, acquired by the ancient city museum through bequests, donations, and purchases. Of the original art gallery, whose consistency is known through archival records, were the famous panels by Antonello da Messina depicting the Appearance of the Angels to Abraham and Saint Jerome the Penitent, purchased in 1882 by the Rota family, a unique piece in Calabria regarding the production of the Sicilian master.
