The museum is housed in Palazzo Albizzini, in the historic center of Città di Castello.
The 15th-century palace features sober Renaissance architecture of Florentine origin. The Albizzini family is documented since the 14th century, and its members played prominent roles in the city’s historical events. On their altar, inside the Church of San Francesco, was the Marriage of the Virgin by Raphael, now at Brera.
An important contemporary art museum, it has been open to the public since 1981 and includes 130 works by the artist (1915-1995), dated from 1948 to 1989, divided into painting, sculpture, graphics, and set design, arranged chronologically by the artist himself in twenty rooms.
The exhibition, spread over two floors, traces Burri’s entire artistic journey from the beginnings to the most complex abstract works where the material, often torn and distressed, becomes a standalone artwork. The attention to natural changes or changes directly induced by the artist on some of the materials used such as Tar, Sacks, Wood, Iron, Plastics recalls his scientific training – Burri graduated in medicine in 1940.
Also very interesting are the sketches for theatrical sets; in 1975 he designed the scenes and costumes for a production of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde staged at the Teatro Regio in Turin, La Fenice in Venice, and the Opera in Rome.
The large works, divided into cycles, are exhibited at the former Tobacco Drying Sheds.
