Barrago Palace, an elegant Liberty-style townhouse in the center of Cagliari, owes its name to its last owner. The building was actually constructed between 1913 and 1915 by the Ligurian entrepreneur Agostino Casaccia, who established on the island, where he stayed until 1923, a business probably related to the wine sector. In 1941 the townhouse was purchased by Francesco Barrago, and in 1974 the Ministry of Public Education declared it of historical and artistic interest. In 1989 it was registered as state property and designated as the headquarters of the Archival Superintendency for Sardinia, which moved there in 1996, following the completion of extensive restoration work. The building, with a rectangular plan, consists of a raised ground floor and a first floor; it features valuable terracotta decorations on the facades, an elegant wrought iron staircase inside, and delicate pear-themed paintings on the walls and ceilings.
