Opened in 2002, the museum is located in the historic center of Nuoro, in the 19th-century building that belonged to Giorgio Asproni, a Sardinian intellectual and politician of the 19th century.
It consists of archaeological materials previously preserved in the Speleo-Archaeological Museum, which also housed the municipal collection from the early twentieth century, materials acquired by the Superintendence during its activity, and donations from private individuals. The exhibition, spread over six rooms, offers a glimpse of the rich archaeological heritage of the provinces of Nuoro and Ogliastra, from the Neolithic (5th millennium BC) to the end of the Middle Ages (15th century AD), allowing visitors to trace the phases of human settlement from the Upper Paleolithic (20,000 years BC). The museum is divided into two sections, archaeological and paleontological, and is limited, also for space reasons, to exhibiting the most significant materials from various periods (Neolithic, Eneolithic, Nuragic era, Hellenistic, Roman, Middle Ages). There is also a collection of two hundred coins from different origins and periods (4th century BC – 5th century AD).
In the archaeological section, the theme of Nuragic age cult buildings dedicated to the water deity is emphasized, highlighting the lesser-known aspects of architecture, costume, and aesthetic taste of the proto-Sardinians from the inland areas. The paleontological section features finds from important vertebrate fossil sites at Monte Tuttavista (Orosei) and Corbeddu Cave (Oliena), dated between the Late Pliocene and the Holocene (about 1.6 million years – 12 thousand years ago).
The exhibition includes evocative educational displays that contextualize the artifacts and make the exhibition path more engaging.
