The Garibaldian Compendium of Caprera, opened to the public in 1976, is the most visited museum in Sardinia. Surrounded by the untouched vegetation of the island, it consists of a vast area that encloses the set of buildings and memorabilia belonging to Giuseppe Garibaldi, who spent the last 25 years of his life here, or acquired after his death in 1882. The main building of the Compendium is the “white house,” built in 1856-57, composed of 7 interconnected rooms: an atrium, three bedrooms, a study, a dining room, and a kitchen. Later, an additional room was added, subsequently called the “death room,” where Garibaldi received relatives and friends. Memorabilia linked to his life as a fighter, private mementos, objects belonging to Garibaldi and his family, and original furnishings tell the daily life of the hero, his last companion Francesca Armosino, and their two children, Clelia, the eldest – who lived here until 1959, the year of her death – and Manlio, a great sea enthusiast who suddenly died of tuberculosis at age 26. The Compendium also includes other structures such as the wooden house, the iron house – which also houses the general’s library and that of his direct descendants – the oil mill, the oven, the stable, and the mill, all built by Garibaldi, his son Menotti, and close collaborators. At the center of the farm lies the touching cemetery area, with the granite tomb housing the general’s remains and the graves of his third wife, Francesca Armosino, and the children Manlio, Clelia, Rosa, Anita, and Teresita.
