Inaugurated in 2002, the museum is located in the historic center of Nuoro, in the nineteenth-century palace that belonged to Giorgio Asproni, an intellectual and Sardinian politician of the nineteenth century.
It consists of archaeological materials previously preserved in the Speleo Archaeological Museum, which also included the municipal collection from the early twentieth century, materials acquired by the Superintendence during its activity, and donations from private individuals. The exhibition, spread over six rooms, offers a snapshot of the rich archaeological heritage of the territory of the provinces of Nuoro and Ogliastra from the Neolithic (5th millennium BC) to the end of the Middle Ages (15th century AD) and allows visitors to retrace the phases of human settlement from the Upper Paleolithic (20,000 years BC). The museum is divided into two sections, archaeological and paleontological, and is limited, also for reasons of space, to the exhibition of the most significant materials from various periods (Neolithic, Eneolithic, Nuragic era, Hellenistic age, Roman, Middle Ages.). There is also a collection of two hundred coins from different origins and epochs (4th century BC – 5th century AD).
In the archaeological section, the theme of Nuragic era worship buildings dedicated to the water deity is emphasized, highlighting the lesser-known aspects of architecture, costume, and aesthetic taste of the proto-Sardinians from the interior areas. The paleontological section includes finds from the important vertebrate deposits of Monte Tuttavista (Orosei) and the Corbeddu cave (Oliena), dating between the Upper Pliocene and the Holocene (approximately 1.6 million years – 12 thousand years ago).
The exhibition is supported by evocative educational setups that contextualize the finds and make the exhibition path more engaging.
