The archaeological collection of Gorizia includes artifacts from various excavation campaigns carried out in the Gorizia area between the late 19th century and the 1970s.
It documents the cultural evolution of the territory of the current province of Gorizia and the Soča and Vipava Valleys, from the end of the Paleolithic to the medieval and Renaissance ages.
The first room displays stone tools dating from the end of the Paleolithic to the end of the Neolithic (450,000 – 3,000/2,500 BC).
The second room houses artifacts from the Protohistoric period (2,500 – 2,000 BC), marked by the introduction of metal (copper and bronze) and the Iron Age (1st millennium BC).
In the third room are Roman Age artifacts (iron tools and implements related to fishing, agriculture, woodworking, glassworking, and construction) and Early Medieval items (iron weapons). Among the most precious artifacts stands out the Lombard cross made of gold leaf, datable to the late 6th century.
