Built in a position of great visual prominence on the hillside sloping down towards the Calore river, the Arch represents one of the most significant monuments of Roman artistic production. The rich decorative scheme celebrates, on the side facing the countryside, Trajan’s achievements in the conquered provinces and, on the side facing the city, scenes of peace and imperial donations in Italy. A careful restoration work, completed in 2002 by the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage, has restored the sculpted surfaces of the arch to their original splendor. In the nearby Church of Sant’Ilario, managed by the Provincial Administration of Benevento, it is possible to visit “The Arch Museum,” a multimedia installation that recalls the life and deeds of Emperor Trajan through the reliefs of the Arch.
