The archaeological area represents the first core of the Archaeological Park of ancient Abella and houses the only monument currently visitable of the Roman city. The amphitheater, whose depiction appears on the side of a limestone statue base from the Antonine period now preserved in the square in front of the Ducal Palace in Avella’s historic center, was built in the 1st century BC in the southeastern sector of the ancient city, in an area previously occupied by residential structures from the Samnite period. The monument, constructed in opus reticulatum, was built alongside the city walls and supported, in the southwestern sector, by substructures intended to bear the media and summa cavea, the latter not preserved.
