Built in a position of great prospective prominence on the hillside sloping towards the Calore River, the Arch represents one of the most significant monuments of Roman artistic production. The rich decorative apparatus celebrates, on the side facing the countryside, Trajan’s exploits in the conquered provinces and, on the side facing the city, scenes of peace and the emperor’s gifts in Italy. A careful restoration intervention, completed in 2002 by the Superintendency for Archaeological Heritage, has restored the sculpted surfaces of the arch to their original splendor. In the nearby Church of Sant’Ilario, managed by the Provincial Administration of Benevento, it is possible to visit “The Arch Museum,” a multimedia installation that evokes the life and deeds of Emperor Trajan through the reliefs of the Arch.
