L’Archivio di Stato di Benevento was established by decree of the Ministry of the Interior on April 10, 1954, implementing the 1939 law on the new organization of State Archives. Initially created as an Archive section, it quickly managed, under the guidance of its first directors – Giuseppe Coniglio and Catello Salvati – to acquire important documents to reconstruct the history of the Sannio from the 1400s onwards: primarily the notarial acts, the richest source for understanding the entire particular premodern and modern historical story of the territory. Today the State Archive has found a permanent home in the ancient and prestigious former Archbishop’s Seminary, one of the first to be established following the conclusion of the Council of Trent.
