L’Archivio di Stato di Benevento was established by decree of the Ministry of the Interior on April 10, 1954, which implemented the 1939 law on the new organization of State Archives. Initially created as an Archive section, it quickly succeeded, under the guidance of its first directors – Giuseppe Coniglio and Catello Salvati – in acquiring important documents to reconstruct the history of Sannio from 1400 onwards: above all the acts of Notaries, the richest source for understanding the entire particular historical pre-modern and modern story of the territory. Today the State Archive has found its definitive location in the ancient and prestigious headquarters of the former Archiepiscopal Seminary, one of the first to be established at the conclusion of the Council of Trent.
