The State Archive of Benevento was established by decree of the Ministry of the Interior on April 10, 1954, implementing the 1939 law on the new organization of State Archives. Initially created as an Archive section, it soon managed, under the guidance of its first directors – Giuseppe Coniglio and Catello Salvati – to acquire important documents to reconstruct the history of Sannio from 1400 onwards: primarily the acts of the Notaries, which is the richest source to understand the entire particular premodern and modern historical events of the territory. Today, the State Archive has found a permanent home in the ancient and prestigious building of the former Archbishop’s Seminary, one of the first to be established following the Council of Trent.
