The city, founded not many years ago, is located in the heart of the “Low Desert“, the true name of what is known to most as the “Colorado Desert“, southeast of California. It is here that golf enthusiasts can “choose” where to enjoy themselves, among about seventy courses. A big contradiction, there’s no denying it, between the aridity of the desert surrounding the town and the greenery of the courses. But Palm Springs was deliberately created this way. It was meant to be a place of tranquility but, at the same time, luxurious, for numerous American stars. And not only them.
Palm Springs’ fame as a vacation and winter residence destination was significantly boosted right after World War II by well-known personalities like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. To put it simply, Palm Springs was and is the holiday destination of Hollywood stars who in just two hours by car can enjoy the exceptional climate (in winter, temperatures can reach even 38 degrees) and the thermal waters of this oasis. Today, nearly sixty years after its “construction”, it has about forty thousand inhabitants. It is estimated that there is one swimming pool for every three inhabitants and one palm tree for every two residents. Palm Springs has shared the same fate as many villages in the western States. It was born as a settlement for gold seekers although its subsequent development has certainly been rosier.
The secret is not only in the climate. Here, unlike in Los Angeles itself, which truthfully has nothing to compare (in terms of climate, crime, and vastness) with Palm Springs, but also unlike other Californian cities, there is no danger of seismic shocks or fire. A true paradise, therefore. According to several scholars, Palm Springs existed over a thousand years ago as an Indian settlement. But it was in the fifties that it gained worldwide fame. There was not a movie star who did not pass through here. Palm Springs is also easily associated with the figure of Elvis Presley. It was here that the famous rockstar “attempted” to spend his honeymoon. Attempted because shortly afterward, discovered by paparazzi, he was forced to flee with his wife Priscilla. A real shame, for a place that would have gladly welcomed two lovers. A dream place, of those however, from which we would never want to wake up.
Palm Springs, southern California hotspot for VIPs
“Winter golf capital of the world.” This is the description often given to one of the most glamorous places in the States: Palm Springs.
