Oil and fishing have made it rich and lively, and its over 200,000 inhabitants have always been proud of this “splendid self-sufficiency.” The oldest core, Old Aberdeen, designed with cobblestone streets, is located north of the center, on the banks of the River Don and preserves evocative buildings, such as St. Machar’s Cathedral (6th century), the oldest granite building in the city. King’s College, the first university, founded in 1495, and the Brig O’Balgownie, the bridge over the Don, from the 13th century.
