Besides being the northernmost and largest county in Sweden, Lapland is a world far from ordinary or lacking in attractions, excellently connected to the rest of the country for decades and shaped by overwhelming nature, with lakes, mountains, plateaus, and hills that make it a kind of living tapestry.

Home to the so-called Lapps or, more correctly, Sami, this territory is recommended not only in summer but also during the long Arctic winter.

Lapland in Winter

Even though nature goes into hibernation, there are a thousand ways to have fun and explore a land of snow and ice: rides on snowmobiles or on sleds pulled by reindeer or huskies through endless forests or across frozen lakes; meeting the Lapps and lunch breaks in a typical cabin; excursions aboard icebreaker ships; Arctic fishing or cross-country skiing on endless trails.

Coming from the south, one of the first centers you encounter is Arvidsjaur, an ancient Lapp village surrounded by forests and lakes that, in winter, become frozen mirrors where the main car manufacturers usually test their new models: what a thrill, a breathtaking ride in a blazing hot supercar!

Further north, there is Jokkmokk, the Sami town par excellence, with an interesting museum called Ajtte. Here, every first weekend of February, since way back in 1605, a large winter market takes place where you can buy the most varied products and crafts from these lands.

Even further north, in Gällivare, cross-country skiing lovers find splendid trails and, with a bit of luck, you might even spot some champions from our country who come to train right here.
