The Montevergine Library is one of the eleven state public libraries annexed to National Monuments. Its origins trace back to the founder of the Congregation, William of Vercelli, who after initiating the life of the new monastic family on the summit of Mount Partenio, would have descended to Bari where he acquired sacred vestments but especially Greek and Latin manuscripts.
The collection, of great importance and value, includes manuscripts, incunabula and sixteenth-century books, musical collections, more than 200,000 printed volumes from the 17th-20th centuries, and current publishing material mostly of religious nature (theology, biblical studies, hagiography, church history, history of the fathers) but also scientific and literary.
Among the twenty-one preserved codices, it is worth mentioning the Legenda de vita ed obitu Sancti Guilielmi, a 13th-century Latin manuscript in Beneventan script about the life of the founder; the Breviarum ordinis cistercensium, a 14th-century Latin manuscript in Gothic script concerning a Cistercian monastic lectionary; the Breviarum ordinis S. Benedicti, a 14th-century Latin manuscript in Gothic script; the Psalterium Davidis, a 15th-century Latin manuscript in humanistic script.
Among the illustrated manuscripts, the numerous “platee” (listed and reasoned descriptions of goods, buildings, and territorial appurtenances) stand out, mostly dating to the 18th century, when a surveyor from Benevento, Bartolomeo Cocchi, was tasked with surveying all the possessions of the Abbey of Montevergine. Attached to the Library is an Archive section, with 7,000 parchments and more than 100,000 loose documents, where documents related to the life of the Virginian monastic Congregation of Montevergine are preserved.
