The State Archive of Enna was officially established as a State Archive Section by a decree of the Ministry of the Interior dated December 27, 1950, pursuant to Article 2 of the law of December 22, 1939, no. 2006, effective from January 16, 1951, even though earlier, in 1941 just after the construction of the Government Palace, the provincial administrators had already strived to request its establishment. The subsequent circumstances related to the state of war caused the postponement until 1949. It became a State Archive thanks to the Presidential Decree of September 30, 1963, no. 1409. It is a peripheral body of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, General Directorate for Archives. It performs protective and supervisory activities over the archives of the state administrations of the Province. It preserves the records of judicial magistracies, state administrations of the Province, acts of past magistracies, and of various ceased administrations and moral entities. It plays a leading role in the protection, safeguarding, and enhancement of documentary heritage. In the State Archive of Enna, which preserves documentation coming from the State Archives and the financial offices of the provinces of Caltanissetta and Catania, administrative documentation relating to matters exhausted for over 40 years, or even earlier if there is a risk of dispersion and/or damage, can be deposited. The collection consists of about 52,000 items arranged on about 6,000 linear meters of shelving, slightly more than half of which are compact type. The premises are sufficiently equipped for the functional needs of the Institute and the storage facilities offer good reception opportunities for deposits.
