L’Archivio di Stato di Enna was officially established as a Section of the State Archive by decree of the Ministry of the Interior on December 27, 1950, pursuant to art. 2 of the law of December 22, 1939, n° 2006, effective January 16, 1951, although even earlier, in 1941, immediately after the construction of the Government Palace, provincial administrators had endeavored to request its establishment. The ensuing circumstances related to the state of war caused a postponement until 1949. It became a State Archive thanks to the Presidential Decree of September 30, 1963, n. 1409. It is a peripheral body of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, General Directorate for Archives. It carries out protection and supervision activities of the archives of the state administrations of the Province. It preserves the acts of the judicial magistratures, of the state administrations of the Province, acts of past magistratures, and of various ceased administrations and moral entities. It plays a leading role in the work of protection, safeguarding, and enhancing the documentary heritage. In the State Archive of Enna, which preserves documentation from the State Archives and financial offices of the provinces of Caltanissetta and Catania, administrative documentation relating to matters closed for over 40 years, or even earlier if there is a risk of dispersion and/or damage, can be deposited. The collection consists of about 52,000 items arranged on about 6,000 linear meters of shelving, slightly more than half of which are compact type. The premises are sufficiently equipped for the functional needs of the Institute, and the deposits offer good storage opportunities for deposits.
