The museum is located behind the Sanctuary of Saint Paul (or Saint Paul at the Rotunda) and features a very rich and varied collection that includes paintings, panels, silverware, statues, and especially an exceptional collection of icons. The founder of the Small Museum was Monsignor Gangemi, a learned priest, author of publications, theatrical texts, and a fine scholar of Ancient Greek and Latin. He wanted to establish the museum so that all his research work would remain in the city. He died poor and retained until the end that simplicity in manner that belongs only to special people. Among the many preserved works, particular attention should be given to a Saint Michael attributed to Antonello da Messina, a Madonna with Child by Cima da Conegliano, a sketch by Raphael, works by Filippo Juvarra, and among the many icons, that of the Madonna and Saint Gerasimus, most probably of Calabrian origin.
