The Provincial Gallery of Modern Art was established in Foggia in September 1980, initially located in two cramped and poorly functional ground-floor rooms of Palazzo Dogana. By the mid-eighties, there was still debate about the Gallery’s role within the city context, the need to regulate exhibition choices, the expansion and upgrading of the spaces, and the type of management. Opened in 2003, the new Gallery of modern and contemporary art occupies about half of the ground floor of Palazzo Dogana, in rooms suitably renovated according to modern museological requirements, thanks to POR 2000-2006 funds. The Gallery’s purpose is to document, especially through future acquisitions and its Archive, artistic activity in Capitanata between the 19th and 20th centuries, and to promote, with temporary exhibitions, the knowledge of the most advanced contemporary artistic research.
