The Marine Biology Museum has never been a mere “display of specimens”; its founder, Prof. Pietro Parenzan, has always endeavored to convey important information to visitors about the habitat and life habits of the exhibited organisms. The collections of marine mollusks, anthozoans, crustaceans, echinoderms, sponges, and an almost complete sample of Ionian fish frame exhibits such as tropical sea specimens, abyssal Ionian fish, and monstrous specimens, totaling over 900 items. Newly arranged rooms enliven the display of the original collection; the Fishing Room, designed as a “bridge” between the museum reality and the local environment through the exhibition of resin models of fish caught locally, accompanied by educational sheets illustrating the morphological features and life habits of each species; the Basking Shark Room, which simulates the marine depths where this giant of the sea swims. Numerous panels and explanatory posters contribute to the dissemination and education on environmental protection topics and the revival of local traditions, such as ancient recipes related to fish cuisine in Porto Cesareo.
