In Isernia, there is the beautiful National Paleolithic Museum which encompasses the National Museum of Santa Maria delle Monache and the excavation area La Pineta. Opened in the spring of 1999, the National Paleolithic Museum offers the chance to witness the excavation of the paleosol carried out by scholars. The new facility, designed as a permanent laboratory where finds are excavated, restored, studied, and exhibited on site, was built directly on the paleosol excavation, fully immersing visitors who, once the entire museum complex is completed, will find themselves within a multifunctional space including exhibition rooms, scientific laboratories, educational panels, conference and projection rooms, as well as a modern computerized and teleconference system, along with virtual reconstructions. With its 736,000 years of age, the Isernia Paleolithic site remains the oldest and richest paleosol found in Europe, even though it has not yet yielded any hominid remains.
