The themes developed in the exhibition path – further expanded in 1996 with the addition of two introductory rooms dedicated to the Resistance and the free zones – follow both a chronological and thematic criterion.
The Resistance in the Modena and Reggio Apennines, the partisans on the Gothic Line, the free zone of Montefiorino, and the social aspects of the time are illustrated through photographs, documents, relics, weapons, equipment items, portraits, clothing, and accessories, connected by brief narrative texts. Thematic lecterns allow for a deeper understanding of the topics addressed through the reproduction of the most significant documents, along with three video points that broadcast testimonies from the protagonists.
A terracotta model reproduces the territory where the events took place. In the locality of Monchio, a former free zone, stands the ‘Santa Giulia Memorial – Sculptures for the Resistance,’ a complex of fourteen gigantic sandstone monoliths arranged at the foot of the climb to the church of the same name, created by Italian and foreign sculptors in memory of the massacre that took place in the area.
The Museum unfolds in a coherent path of nine rooms, combining a direct reenactment of the past through artifacts and testimonies (while also exploiting the charm of the fortress) with the use of advanced multimedia technologies.
