The Museum showcases all aspects of the material culture of traditional Sardinia (clothing, jewelry, textile and wooden artifacts, weapons, masks, breads, folk music instruments, domestic and work tools, etc.). The collections include about 8,000 items, mostly dating from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. Around 80 male and female garments and several pieces of children’s clothing are on display, all authentic and actually used before being acquired by the museum. The Museum presents a vast collection of jewelry and amulets. Wooden facial masks, cowbells, and sheepskins represent various traditions rooted deeply in the distant history of Mediterranean peoples. Visitors can observe about 60 Sardinian folk music instruments along with several sound devices and toys. Finally, the museum’s display cases exhibit around one hundred traditional breads, part of a collection of over 600 varieties, most of which have long fallen out of use. The Museum constitutes the most important ethnographic collection in the region, permanently open to the public. It is linked to the Specialist Library of ISRE, accessible upon written request.
