The Maritime Museum of Cesenatico consists of two sections: a ‘Floating Section,’ where visitors can freely board ten traditional sailing vessels anchored in the canal port in sailing condition, and a ‘Land Section’ inaugurated in 2005, which offers visitors a broad and evocative journey dedicated to the history of traditional maritime navigation of the upper and middle Adriatic.
The ‘Floating Section’ hosts in the Leonardo canal port bragozzi, trabaccoli, launches, paranze, topi, battane, all dating between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A striking scenic effect is created by the colorful sails that enliven the museum during the summer period. The boats, perfectly restored according to their characteristics and functions, are equipped with original instruments both for fishing and for transporting materials. The other section of the Museum, the ‘Land Section,’ is located in an area adjacent to the water basin inside a new building designed following the lines of the ancient arsenals, offering a suggestive journey through materials and testimonies of traditional maritime navigation. In the center of the large museum pavilion are hosted the two boats that were protagonists of sailing navigation in the Upper Adriatic: the trabaccolo and the bragozzo. In the first part of the route, called “structure and construction,” the simple materials and elementary technologies with which humans have navigated for millennia are illustrated; here an eighteenth-century ship carpentry workshop has been reassembled. In the second part, dedicated to “propulsion and steering,” ancient and modern anchors are on display, while a large section illustrates the evolution of sailing equipment and also the transition from traditional boats to motorized hulls. The visit is completed by exploring two terraces to observe the boats from above and to glimpse the details of the sails and masts.
