MUSA is a permanent educational exhibition with a demo-ethno-anthropological character aimed at telling a beautiful and poignant story, that of the relationship between man, land, and machine—a relationship marked by evolution with the slow replacement of manual and animal labor by tractors, but also by suffering, with increased injury mortality, demographic decline in rural areas, and the rise of quantitative production that has often depressed rather than boosted the local agricultural economy. Located in a beautifully restored rural farmhouse in Contrada Piano Cappelle, just a few kilometers from the city center of Benevento, MUSA offers breathtaking agricultural landscapes stretching to the horizon, encouraging not only a visit to the futuristic exhibition structure but also recreational activities like cycling tourism, walking, and aerobic fitness. Inside, spread over 10 pavilions, the collection of tractors and agricultural machines from around the world includes rare specimens in perfect condition, a series of installations recreating the living environments of traditional agricultural society, a plasma screen system showing educational films, and the magical multimedia Quadrisfera, which tells, through a complex system of videos and mirrors, the evolution of the rural landscape over time. In the guided tour, the agricultural machine, seemingly cold and abstract, comes to life, surrounded by figures of laborers and small landowners, thrills visitors with the experience of warming the “hot heads” — very special engines that required a fire ignition under the cylinder head — entertains by showing ingenious modifications and adaptations like tractors transformed into cars and rubberized tracks for road mobility, and moves visitors with the memory of the many, too many farmworkers who lost their lives fighting for the dignity of their work. The setup, following the stages of introducing technology into the difficult and proud work of the fields, forms the backdrop for countless traditional stories, recovering agricultural techniques and products that have disappeared or are at risk of disappearing. Finally, in the Projection/3D Room, visitors can watch a descriptive film about the evolutionary process of the man-machine relationship in agriculture.
