Il MUSA is a permanent educational exhibition of a demo-ethno-anthropological nature aimed at telling a beautiful and touching story, that of the relationship between man, land, and machine, a relationship marked by evolution – with the slow replacement of manual and animal labor with that of the tractor – but also by suffering, with the increase in fatal accidents, demographic decline in rural areas, and the emergence of quantitative production, which often depressed rather than encouraged the local agricultural economy. Located in a beautifully restored rural farmhouse, in Contrada Piano Cappelle, just a few kilometers from the city center of Benevento, MUSA allows visitors to admire a breathtaking agricultural landscape stretching as far as the eye can see towards the horizon, stimulating not only a visit to the futuristic exhibition facility but also recreational activities such as cycle tourism and walking and aerobic fitness activities. Inside, spread across 10 pavilions, is the collection of tractors and agricultural machinery from around the world, with rare specimens in perfect condition, a series of installations reconstructing living environments in traditional agricultural society, a plasma screen system with educational films, and the magical multimedia Quadrisfera, which tells, through a complex system of videos and mirrors, the evolution of the rural landscape over time. In the guided tour, the agricultural machine, seemingly cold and abstract, comes to life and is surrounded by figures of laborers and small landowners, excites with the experience of warming up the ‘hot heads’ – very special engines requiring a fire to be lit under the cylinder head – entertains with ingenious modifications and adaptations to the particular needs of tractors transformed into cars and tracks covered with tires for road usability, moves visitors with the memory of the many, too many laborers who lost their lives fighting for the dignity of their work. The setup, following the steps of technical introduction in the arduous and proud work of the fields, serves as a backdrop to an endless series of traditional stories, recovery of agricultural techniques, and products disappeared or at risk of disappearing. Finally, in the Projection/3D Room, one can watch a descriptive film on the evolutionary process in the man-machine relationship in agriculture.
