The rectory of Santa Maria di Pomposa, where Ludovico Antonio Muratori (1672-1750), librarian and archivist of the Este dukes and one of the main figures of Italian historiography, served as parish priest from 1716, houses the museum. The entire block forms the so-called Aedes Muratoriana, which includes the church where Ludovico Pogliaghi executed the monumental tomb of the Modenese scholar. While the remaining rooms of the building host the Deputation of Homeland History for the Ancient Provinces of Modena, Muratori’s private apartment has been reserved for a museum path. The itinerary opens with the eighteenth-century library, which preserves all editions of Muratorian works, some autographs, a collection of medals minted in honor of the historian, and the rich correspondence he maintained with other prominent figures of his time, such as philosophers and scientists of the caliber of Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. In addition to furniture and personal objects, some of his portraits are hung in the study, while the small adjacent rooms document his priestly activity and illustrate, with views, the places of his earthly journey.
