The original core of the collection dates back to 1971 when artists and professors from the Academy of Fine Arts (including Aldo Borgonzoni, Pompilio Mandelli, Enzo Pasqualini, and Ilario Rossi) donated some of their works to the Archbishop Emeritus of Bologna, Cardinal Giacomo Lercaro (1891 – 1976), to celebrate his eightieth birthday. Continuing the cardinal’s work, the Foundation bearing his name can today boast a collection of over 1600 works, with an important section dedicated to 20th-century sculpture. The current venue was inaugurated in 2003.
