The Mineralogical and Paleontological Museum of the Sulfur Mine in Caltanissetta, unique in its kind in southern Italy, documents the mining activity of the ancient sulfur mines.
In the province of Caltanissetta, several extraction plants, now abandoned but well preserved, can still be found today. In addition to the collection of important gypsum-sulfur type minerals, rare rocks, and fossils, the museum also preserves some period instruments used in the mining life, such as extraction towers, mine carts used for transporting minerals, and “Gill” furnaces.
Particularly interesting is the scale reconstruction of a mine cross-section, where it is possible to recognize the galleries, the extraction shaft, and the furnaces. The museum also holds a rich series of geological maps of Sicily.
