The Mineralogical and Paleontological Museum of the Zolfara of Caltanissetta, unique of its kind in southern Italy, documents the mining activity of the ancient sulfur mines.
In the province of Caltanissetta, there are still several extraction plants that have fallen into disuse but are well preserved. In addition to the collection of important gypsum-sulfur minerals, rocks, and rare fossils, the museum also preserves some period tools used in the life of the mines, such as extraction towers, wagons used for transporting minerals, and “Gill” furnaces.
Particularly interesting is the scale reconstruction of a mine cross-section, where it is possible to recognize the galleries, the extraction shaft, and the furnaces. The museum also preserves a rich series of geological maps of Sicily.
