The Mineralogical and Paleontological Museum of the Zolfara of Caltanissetta, unique of its kind in southern Italy, documents the mining activity of the ancient sulfur mines.
In the province of Caltanissetta there are still several disused extraction plants, but well preserved. In addition to the collection of important gypsum sulfur minerals, rare rocks and fossils, the museum also preserves some period instruments used in the life of the mines, such as extraction towers, wagons used for transporting minerals, the “Gill” furnaces.
Particularly interesting is the scale reconstruction of a mine cross-section, where it is possible to recognize the galleries, the extraction shaft and the furnaces. The museum also preserves a rich series of geological maps of Sicily.
