Housed inside the Town Hall of Panicale, the collection consists of thirty-one canvases commissioned by the Perugian Francesco Mariottini between 1765 and 1780 and donated to the Municipality at the end of the following century. Professor of civil and canon law and also rector of the University of Perugia from 1776, Mariottini descended from a branch of the ancient Panicale family of the Saccalossi. It is perhaps because among the most prominent figures in the city there are as many as 10 Saccalossi that the scholar commissioned the entire series of celebratory portraits, later destined to adorn his family’s palace.
