Also known as Rocca del Sasso due to its position at the apex of the spur overlooking the town, it is among the largest and best-preserved Malatesta fortresses, featuring a blend of architectural styles dating from the 12th to the 16th century. Here established the Mastin Vecchio, the progenitor of the Malatesta family, remembered by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Visitors can explore the Great Hall, various rooms that usually host exhibitions and setups, the Keep with its panoramic terrace, the dungeons, the capacious 13th-century cistern still perfectly functional, the rampart, the guardhouse, and the clock tower. It currently houses a remarkable collection of medieval weapons: besides the model of the first firearm appeared in the West, you can admire some muzzle-loading weapons, 15th-century armors, arquebuses, and a hefty 15th-century bombard.
