Established in 1999 by the Municipality, Province, Jewish Community, and the Institute for Cultural Heritage, with the aim of preserving and enhancing the Jewish cultural heritage in Bologna and Emilia-Romagna, the museum is housed in Palazzo Pannolini, a historic building located within the former ghetto. The visit itinerary is divided into three areas: on the ground floor are the permanent exhibition section and the one intended for temporary activities; on the first floor is set up the museum’s documentation center. The exhibition layout, supported by multimedia tools and illustrative and educational materials, addresses the theme of Jewish identity, explained through essential points via the history and culture of the Bologna community, relations with the university, commercial ties, and conventional credit, customs, traditions, festivals, and rites. Two rooms are dedicated to the presence of Jews in Bologna and other cities in Emilia and Romagna. In the documentation center, bibliographic sources and the “databases” linked to the museum and various institutes of the telematic network can be consulted. Among the many cultural initiatives of the museum, courses in ancient and modern Hebrew language stand out.
