It is located inside the Baroque Cassero of Porta Lame, built in the mid-17th century as one of the gates to the city along the ancient city walls demolished in the early 20th century. It houses a rich mineralogical heritage, mostly from the Bologna Gypsum area, but also includes samples from other Italian regions. There are numerous specimens of crystallizations, mineralizations, and concretions. Some “historical” display cases feature tools used by the first explorers of the Bolognese Speleological Group, founded in 1932 by Luigi Fantini, pioneer in the research on Bolognese prehistory, after whom the museum is named. The collections are accompanied by a speleological library containing about nine thousand volumes and a photographic archive rich in about five thousand images of caves and karst environments.
